The Val do Salnés Area, whose centre is in the town of Cambados, is the biggest area in surface. It is a geographic region which coincides with the opening of the River Umia Valley, in the town of Caldas de Reis. It includes the municipalities of Cambados, Meaño, Sanxenxo, Ribadumia, Meis, Vilanova de Arousa, A Illa de Arousa, Portas, Caldas de Reis, Vilagarcía de Arousa, Barro and O Grove
The winding coast of the Firth of Arousa is always present along this route.
The historical remains of Vilanova, a fishing village, date back from the Roman invasion. Two interesting rural palaces, called Pazos in Galician, can be found in this area: Pazo de Cuadrante and Pazo de los Camba.
If we keep on travelling towards Cambados, we will find the interesting tidal mill "A Seca", which dates from the 17th century. In Cambados, which is known to be the capital of Albariño wine, there are remains of the Celtic culture and the trading activities with the Phoenicians. The town was founded under the realm of the Visigoth king Witiza. The beautiful building Pazo de Figueroa, from the 16th century, can be found in the Fefiñáns Square. Not very far from here, on the coastal line, the visitor can admire the Pazo de Bazán, from the 17th century, which has been turned into a National Parador, that is, a state-owned hotel. It is also interesting to visit the San Sadurniño ruins, from the 10th century, the Pazo de Montesacro (17th century) the San Sadurniño Tower (10th century) and many other noble buildings and palaces.
On the road from Vilagarcía de Arousa to Pontearnelas we can find Mount Lobeira, from which we can behold a spectacular view of Vilagarcía and its firth. Nearby, in the Parish of András, we will find the Pazo de Rúa Nova (16th century), which was the family residence of the famous writer Ramón María de Valle Inclán and was built on an ancient fortress.
In the municipality of Meis we recommend the tourist to visit the churches of Santa María de Paradela and San Julián de Romai. Another compulsory stop is the Romanesque church of San Salvador, from the 12th century. On the north slope of Mount Castrove we can visit the Cistercian Monastery of Armenteira built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its church, with a Latin-cross ground plan, has three semicircular apses and one of the most beautiful façades in Galicia.
In the centre of the town of Sanxenxo, which is full of tourists during the summer season, we will find the Pazo de Miraflores and if we travel towards O Grove, we will pass by a typical fishing village, called Portonovo.
Along the coast, we will find some excellent beaches (Canelas, Paxariñas, Montalvo, Pociñas, Aios and Nosa Señora), before getting to A Lanzada, the most important one. On a split of land that penetrates the sea the Tower of A Lanzada was built on the 10th century (it was an ancient Phoenician lighthouse). Right beside this building, we can find the Chapel of Santa María, which is a paradigmatic example of Romanesque art in Galicia. Around this religious building, a typical celebration is held on Saint John's Day, which includes a ritual to increase our fecundity consisting of being hit by nine waves in the sea.
The municipality of Grove does not include the elegant Island of A Toxa, with its medicinal water springs, its Spa and golf course, but also O Grove, a fishing port famous for the quality of its seafood. We can also find here the viewpoint and ancient Celt settlement of A Siradella and the necropolis of Adro Vello.
From Armenteira, we recommend the visitor to climb up to Mount Busto and then follow the forest path CF 102. After 1.5 km, we will find a wide road, which will lead us to a series of valuable stone engravings, petroglyphs with an intriguing labyrinth (O Cribo).
Within the Municipality of Meaño, we recommend you to visit the Church of Santa María de Simes (from the 13th century) with a beautiful presbytery, a Romanesque façade and a Baroque tower. Combarro, which has been declared national historical monument, offers the beauty of its traditional granaries and stone houses.
