The plenary session of the Rías Baixas D.O. classifies the 2016 vintage "excelent"
72 marcas de la denominación protagonizan un túnel del vino en Barcelona, un mercado en alza para sus productos.
27th June, 2017: The President of the Regulating Council of the Rías Baixas Wine Appellation, Juan Gil de Araujo, announced that the 2016 vintage had been classified by the Council’s plenary session “Excellent”, ”, the highest category that can be granted. This decision was made on the basis of a technical report carried out by the Certification and Control Body and after the conclusions reached by the session held last 9th June.
During a lunch held today in Madrid with the specialised media, Gil de Araujo stated that ““these wines of the 2016 vintage have good aromatics, revealing ripe fruit, elegant citrus notes and white flowers. On the palate, there is good ripeness together with freshness of flavour thanks to good acidity levels and alcoholic degree”.
Climatically, 2016 was an atypical year. It rained a lot during winter and at the beginning of spring, and temperatures were lower than usual. On the other hand, summer was very dry and hot, which chased away any trace of fungal disease in the vines. Light rainfall during mid-September enabled the vines to re-hydrate and the grapes to complete their ripening process very well and produce a very satisfactory crop size.
The last time a vintage of the Rías Baixas appellation had been classified “Excellent” was in 2007.
The Barcelona Wine Tunnel
Barcelona was the city chosen to set up a Wine Tunnel for the presentation of the 2016 Vintage Classification. Bringing together wine critics from the Catalan region, this event took place on Thursday 29th June in the Casa Fuster between 11.30am and 2pm and then from 6pm to 10pm. 72 brands coming from 45 of the appellation’s wineries were presented at the event. All of the wines were from the 2016 vintage.
The last Wine Tunnel set up in the Catalan capital for the presentation of the vintage was in 2015. Barcelona is a strategic point for the Rías Baixas appellation with the city’s cosmopolitan mix and is a reference point for both Spain and Europe.
